6 Health and Wellness Trends for 2019

Intuitive eating, single-tasking, and CBD infused products; what do these three things have in common aside from being the perfect additions to the practice of slowing down and chilling the f*ck out?! I predicted that they’d make a major splash last year — and based on the vast number of CBD products I’m seeing saturate the market, from lip balms to eczema lotions to raw chocolate, I think my 2018 health and wellness trend predictions were pretty spot on! These trends are here to stay. And for good reason.

If you’ve mastered these trends and are ready for some new additions in 2019, then I have some good news for you: 2019 is looking like it’s going to be a year where we continue to build on the same health and wellness principles but with elevated themes of eco-consciousness and deeper introspection.

Btw I use the term trends loosely because in my mind a trend is something that’s in one year and out another, whereas I believe these specific trends, or better yet practices, can be integral elements of true holistic health.

Now, go grab yourself a mug of hot tea and read on.

  1. An Introduction to the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) — Since hemp made a major appearance last year, there’s lots of emerging research on how hemp actually interacts in the human body. Enter the endocannabinoid system. According to Martin A. Lee, the director of Project CBD, "The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating most physiological processes that have been studied: immune function, pain perception, glucose metabolism, blood pressure, bone density, intestinal fortitude, sleep, mood, memory, neuroplasticity, and much more. It's the reason cannabis is such a versatile medicine that can help so many conditions." Expect to see lots of talk as this new subject comes to light, and remember that knowledge is power — no matter what side of the spectrum you’re on in relation to the legalization of the plant.

  2. Brain Health — I cannot be more behind this. Our brain health is vital for our overall wellbeing. End of story. I wrote a blog post on the top 5 brain boosters if you want to dig deeper.

  3. Shelf-Stable Probiotics — We all likely know the importance of good gut health and how good quality probiotics can be one of the most effective ways of revving up the health of that microbiome, but for some of us who travel lots and/or have busy lives, probiotics that require constant refrigeration may deter us from integrating them into our daily regimes. Well now we have a solution that will make probiotics more accessible: shelf-stable probiotics. These will range from probiotic capsules to the addition of shelf-stable probiotics in pantry staples like granola bars, oatmeal, and nut butters. My advice to you: make sure that you trust the company and source of probiotic and continue to ALWAYS check the ingredient list for added sugars, preservatives, and fillers.

  4. Eco-Conscious Packaging — We’ve seen restaurants and cafes beginning to ban plastic straws, plastic bags, and unnecessary packaging (hurray!) and in December of 2018 Bali Governor, Wayan Koster, banned single-use plastic on the Indonesian island (even bigger hurray!) so I’m happy to see more and more people/companies follow suit by gravitating towards recyclable, compostable, and even zero packaging. This is a great addition if you’re already trying to be more of a conscious consumer, and if you’re not there yet and reading this while sipping on your frapp through a plastic straw, maybe this is the kick in the butt you needed.

  5. Sleep Hygiene — Since the rise of social media and the newfound pressure to be a millennial hustler, we’re all a little more anxious and frantic and likely seeing a negative impact on our sleep quality and quantity. As Arianna Huffington told Fast Company, sleep deprivation is “the new smoking.” Fret not. 2019 is the year where you can begin to focus on the importance of sleep hygiene on a cellular level. If you need further help with this, you can check out my site for one-on-one help. Expect to see an improvement of mood, enhanced energy levels, and increased libido. Need I say more?

  6. Simplifying Your Life — Yes, the principle is really as easy as it sounds; letting go of what no longer serves you and embracing and honing in on what does. This can range from re-learning the art of single-tasking to digital detoxing to reducing clutter around the house. It’s really all about soul-searching and uncovering what truly and authentically matters to YOU.

And there you have it: my top six health and wellness trend predictions for 2019. Do you see an overall theme?

Happy new year everyone!

Peace, self-love, and kale,

Monica Elena
